Equipment DescriptionIn the Unit Operations Laboratory, we experiment with two distillation columns: a 24-plate and a 12-plate distillation column. The 24-plate column is normally used for continuous distillation experiments and the 12-plate distillation column for batch distillation experiments. The examples in this tutorial model the 24-plat column both in steady state operation (steady state continuous operation and total reflux) and in dynamic mode ( with total reflux and with distillate withdrawal). The 12-plate column in the Unit Ops Laboratory can be modeled using the same procedures as for modeling the 24-plate distillation column described in this tutorial. The only difference is the number of plates and the hold ups on the trays and reboiler. The procedure is the same but at the beginning when entering the parameters for the column, just select 12 instead of 24 when entering number of plates. Continuous DistillationContinuous steady state operation of a distillation column will be modeled and simulated as the first example. |
