Simulation Diagram

Figure 2 illustrate the HYSYS simulation diagram of the separator.

Figure 2: HYSYS representation of the separator

Model Description

The streams named Air, Water and Steam represent their respective component and are feed into a Separator. The components from the feed streams reach an equilibrium in the separator. The exit phases/streams from the separator are vapor and liquid.

Selecting Fluid Package and Components

  1. Open a new HYSYS case.
  2. In the Simulation Manager window, press the Add button.
  3. In the window that opens, select the EOS radio button.
  4. Select PRSV from the list of available fluid packages which is located on the left side of the window.
  5. Press the Components tab.
  6. Type air in the Match box.
  7. Press the Enter key. Notice that air is added to the component list located on the left side of the window.
  8. Next, type H2O in the match box and then press the Enter key.

Setting up the PFD

  1. Close the fluid package window to return to the simulation manager window.
  2. In the simulation manager window, press the Entering Simulation Environment button to enter the PFD.
  3. From the object palette, select the separator icon.

  4. Click on the PFD to install the separator.

  5. Double click on it  and enter the stream names shown in Figure 2.

Specifying Streams

  1. Click on the Worksheet tab.
  2. On the Conditions page, enter the stream condition shown in table 1.
  3. Next, click on the  Composition tab.
  4. Click in the cell AirAir.
  5. Type 1 and then press enter. A window should open up.
  6. Press the Normalize button and close the window. This will confirm that the air stream contains only air.
  7. Then press the OK button.
  8. Use the above method and to set the mole fraction of the water and the steam streams to be 100 % water.
  9. This should solve all the streams in the simulation.
  10. Click on the Conditions page of the Worksheet tab.
  11. Scroll to the right to view the conditions of the the Vapor stream. In the problem statement, there is a pressure specification on the outlet vapor stream. If you look at the pressure of the vapor stream, it does not match the specification. Also, one should note that the vapor pressure numbers are black . In HYSYS, numbers in black cannot be changed by the user.
  12. Click on the Design tab.
  13. Click on Parameters.
  14. Delete the  the number that is present in the Delta P box. This will will allow you to specify the outlet vapor pressure.
  15. Click on the Conditions page of the Worksheet tab.
  16. Scroll to the right to view the conditions of the the Vapor stream.
  17. Now enter the outlet vapor pressure as given in the problem statement.

Printing Results/Report

  1. Right click on the title bar of the separator window.
  2. From the shortcut menu, select Print Datasheet.
  3. In the window that pops up, uncheck the Reactions and Dynamics boxes in the Available Datablocks (see Figure 3).

Figure 3: Selecting Datablocks to print.

  4. Press the Preview button.
  5. Scroll down and ensure that the correct thing will be printed.
  6. Press the Print button to print.

Save this simulation for further use.
