Plan of Attack

Process Description

In the flash drum, the steam will loose some of its heat to the water and air. This will cause some of the steam to condense. The vapor and liquid  are allowed to reach an equilibrium, and then the vapor and liquid streams are separated. Figure 1 presents a diagram of a flash drum/separator.

Figure 1: Diagram of a separator.

Solution Outline

  1. Use a separator operation in HYSYS to model the flash drum.
  2. Define the feed conditions.
  3. Define the outlet vapor pressure to determine the flow rate in each of outlet phase streams.

Assumptions

  1. The components behave according to the PRSV equation of state.
  2. There is no heat loss to the environment.
