Getting Started With HYSYS

This page is meant to guide a student through the steps to beginning to use HYSYS.

What Is HYSYS?

HYSYS is a user-friendly computer software package developed by Hyprotech . The package combines comprehensive data regression, thermodynamic database access (TRC, DIPPR, DDB, API, PDS) and the Mayflower distillation technology to enable the design and analysis of separation systems, including azeotropic and extractive distillation and non-ideal, heterogeneous and multiple liquid phase systems. HYSYS is currently available in the Biery Room in the Chemical Engineering Building.

Starting Up HYSYS

HYSYS has been installed in the workstations in the Biery Room in the Chemical Engineering Building. Students may also arrange to use a network version which can run on their computer. To access HYSYS, follow these instructions:

  1. Log onto the Windows Workstation  by entering your username and your password.
  2. Once in the Windows environment, click on the Start button   then go to the PROGRAMS menu and click on AEA Technology. Then select the HYSYS.Plant directory, the click on the HYSYS.Plant icon.  This will start HYSYS.Plant which is the form of HYSYS on which this tutorial is based.
  3. Once in HYSYS, you will find a blank screen. To begin your case you can either press <Ctrl> <n> or use the mouse and go in the FILE menu to select NEW then CASE.

Once this is done, a Simulation Basis Manager screen will be displayed and you can begin defining the properties of the materials to be in the model.
